Unfortunately, the two protagonists must face the threat of evil sorcerers and the chaos of war in a world that’s highly prone to uncertainties. David Litwack’s The Maker of Worlds combines the elements of a dreamy atmosphere, adventure themes, and fascinating magic to create a mind-bending tale.

Fantasy fans will like that magic is brilliantly represented in the book. Imagine being able to create structures and change landscapes with magic. Additionally, the book’s descriptive nature allows us to experience an immersive read. Prepare for accounts of such intricacies as “marble pillars, lavish carvings, and a gilded dome.”

I loved David’s intriguing characters, as they come with very unique traits. One such character is the healer, who uses magic to soothe sorrows and heal pain. Additionally, the book maintains a perfect blend of a fantastical, dreamy atmosphere and suspenseful, action-packed themes. From phantom hawks that fly under their master’s control to the frantic water buffalo that’s being pursued by “five ghostly lions,” The Maker of Worlds keeps you guessing about where the story is heading.

Furthermore, the book engages readers with its smart presentation of new discoveries and the characters’ journey to learn more about magic. We see them being mentored and learning from books that hold lessons from many years. This kept me looking forward to when they would eventually know enough about magic to be unstoppable.

Unfortunately, the story appears to focus more on the world than its character development. Lucas, Mia, and other characters appear to be distant, as well as lacking both rich back stories and deep, introspective thoughts.

Overall, The Maker of Worlds has an attractive, dreamy atmosphere with mind-blowing magic and suspenseful action. It is one of those stories with constantly evolving elements that stretch your imagination and challenge your perception of reality. Though we don’t get a deep encounter with the characters, their interesting, magical traits are worth exploring.
