Muslims who perform the Hajj (pilgrimage to Makka) generally characterize the experience as “transformative.” This book takes readers through the Hajj rituals as seen from the perspective of a little girl. Mariam is instructed to “do good, share, and be thankful.” She tried to think what she can do (apart from smiling). She resolves to share the water of Zamzam (a holy well) with other pilgrims performing the Hajj. Mariam goes through all the stages of Hajj. While sharing her water receives treats from all over the world, and learns how to say “thank you” in several different languages. In the end, there is Zamzam water to take home and share with family who stayed at home.

The illustrations showcase the diversity of people performing the Hajj. The different skin tones, ages, and abilities is remarkable. There is a boy with a hearing aid, a woman in a wheelchair, and a man with a crutch. The notion that we are all equal before God comes through powerfully and without proclamation through the illustrations.

The book is great for elementary school readers. Older readers may also find it interesting with its back robust backmatter that outlines the story of Zamzam, the Hajj, as well as the treats (and thanks) from around the world.
