The Man Made of Smoke: A Novel
Criminal psychologist Daniel Garvie is haunted by a childhood event where he failed to save a child from a kidnapping. He later learned that it was linked to a famed serial killer, and never forgave himself. His father John is a recently retired cop, and is suddenly reported missing and likely dead. Daniel returns home to wait for the discovery his father’s body, and begins to uncover clues about what happened to his father. Meanwhile, he discovers the truth about the childhood trauma he endured, and how his father may have been involved in breaking the case.
The Man Made of Smoke is another clever and page-turning thriller from Alex North. I really liked the point of view of both father and son and how their relationship was impacted by the child’s disappearance. There are psychological aspects that were very interesting, though quite creepy! North’s writing is riveting, and he leaves so much suspense at the end of chapters. I got a bit confused during James’ chapters in the early pages, though things made more sense as the story unfolded. I expected a chilling novel from North, and was not disappointed by the story! Read this one with the lights on!
