The Magician’s Daughter
$15.99
Set in the 1970s, Katy, a teenager, recounts her childhood as the daughter of a magician. Lee Grabel had quit his earlier profession and was stuck in the corporate world until he decided he could no longer bear it. Katy had always wanted recognition, and when Lee decided to hit the road again and became a Las Vegas headliner, Katy’s dreams of being in the spotlight started to become a reality.
As the days go by, the Grabel family faces challenges that lead to doubts about achieving their goals, but success is inevitable. Through the memoir, we discover Lee Grabel’s rise to stardom and, behind the scenes, the ups and downs of building a crew and maintaining family relationships. We also follow Katy’s journey as a young adult who is on a path of self discovery.
All my life, magicians have been a mystery to me. While I respect the art and I’m in awe of their dedication to their craft, I never knew what went on in their personal lives. Through this memoir, I’ve gained an understanding of the work that goes into running magic shows, the sacrifices they have to make, and the passion these people have.
< br>Our varying personalities are what makes the world more exciting. As someone who has always shyed away from the public eye, I can only marvel at those who, in fact, crave attention and want to be applauded by the public all their lives. It’s important that the families of those who are passionate about their art be understanding because these artists need the support of their families. I admire Katy for being a dependable daughter, putting her father as her priority for so long, and I’m glad she found her own purpose in life.
Behind every wonderful performance you’ve watched, there’s a lot of work behind the scenes, and I think performers should be appreciated more. Lee Grabel’s story depicts the power of resilience and commitment to one’s dreams despite the numerous obstacles encountered. Even at the lowest points, he nursed his dream, and his belief in himself never wavered.
The memoir was entertaining, as I finally knew what it was like to perform tricks, and I often found myself picturing their costumes in my head. The Magician’s Daughter by Katy Grabel is a book I won’t forget for a long time, and if you’re a fan of memoirs, I can assure you that you’ll enjoy reading this book.
