The Ghost Woods
Mabel finds herself pregnant in 1959 Scotland, and being unwed, gets sent to Lichen Hall, a home for single mothers to give birth and have their babies adopted. Bordering Lichen Hall are The Ghost Woods, where it’s said that a witch lives who forever cursed Lichen Hall to become a place of “rot and ruin.” Six years later, Pearl arrives about to give birth and finds things to be very odd. Fungi have taken over parts of the Hall and the residents behave strangely. Something is lurking in the woods, but the danger may be much closer than Mabel and Pearl could ever know. ||You can tell that the author is into dark ghost stories dealing with difficult topics. This book spends much of its time discussing the treatment of unwed mothers in the 50s and 60s. I don’t know if the things in this book are possible, but I’ll stay away from Cordyceps mushrooms all the same. If you enjoy the author’s other books, especially The Nesting and The Lighthouse Witches, then this book is for you.
