No More Patients

Since Chekov, doctors have proved themselves to be wonderful writers and storytellers. The author of this book, Sandra Carallo Miller, M.D., is no exception. This is a story about mother/daughter doctors, one retired and one on the brink of retirement. Each transition has its own challenges. Dr. Norah Waters has a practice to run and a relationship to nurture while her mother is sinking into an old age of regret and self-recriminations. The daughter is secure within her relationship but would welcome the retirement of her partner. Her partner is unwilling to give up his practice, yet he yearns for a freer life. The daughter is supported by a wonderful and supportive staff yet challenged by more youthful colleagues and their unconventional and borderline creepy ways.

The mother has suffered through three deaths, so she feels alone and adrift. She has yet to find a community where she can be supported through these transitions. The mother hesitates to call upon her daughter to provide the support she needs. She finally gives in and seeks senior activities to fill her time. An eminently readable story.
