Monster Hunter Alpha
Larry Correia gives “Full measure and flowing over”, replete with weapons, blood, nameless ichors, and evolutions of personalities. In first-person point of view, skipping about through a century’s worth of our protagonist’s fantastic life, this tale unfolds with constant action and revelation. Characters develop with interaction, with descriptions that immerse the reader, not seamlessly, but employing all the devices of foreshadowing, flashback, and dialogue.
Earl Harbinger (or Shackleford and several other aliases) must contend with repeated governmental conscriptions, a rogue agency that earnestly desires not only the destruction of Earl’s private identity, and all like him, but to forestall any public knowledge of their existence. Privately, Earl’s personal affliction is not only a handle for blackmail but a constant driver of his life choices. In his public persona, Earl is head of Monster Hunter International, the foremost organization in worldwide monster containment.
Were-instinct-baiting sends our alpha into renewed conflict with his twisted mirror image, emerging from decades of supposed demise. Amidst battles against odds, redheaded deputy Heather is caught up in both Earl’s private war and affliction. A satisfying and generous read with a hidden hook; a lead to a follow-on book is, professionally, made inescapable. It is well worth buying!
