Misled: Why (Almost) Everything We Learned About Leadership Is Wrong and How to Fix It
Misled opens like a man slamming his conference badge onto the hotel dresser and deciding he has had enough. Lawrence Coval’s complaint is clear from the start: leadership culture is overrun with empty inspiration, recycled clichés, and “expert” advice that sounds uplifting but does very little to help actual employees succeed. I found the book most persuasive when it stayed close to that frustration and translated it into concrete observations from Coval’s own career.
Coval’s biggest strength is that he has real managerial scar tissue. The book is built from years in technology and telecommunications, and its most useful sections come from lived examples rather than abstract doctrine. When he writes about overpromoted managers, brittle executives, bad conferences, or leaders who protect metrics while neglecting people, the book has bite.
I also liked the seriousness of his central standard: leadership is not about sounding inspiring. It is about whether the people working under you become more capable because you were there. That is a tougher and more useful test than most airport-business books are willing to apply.
Coval sometimes fights cliché with a different kind of overstatement. The book is full of archetypes, labels, and emphatic claims, and not all of them feel equally sharp. At times, the taxonomy crowds out the messiness of real workplaces, and the tone can drift from energized to aggrieved.
Despite this, Misled works better than a lot of leadership books because it sounds like it was written by someone who has actually had to live with the consequences of bad management. I did not buy every framework, but I respected the book’s refusal to confuse motivational language with leadership itself.
