Honest John Pine: A Golf Story

Vince Wheeler’s Honest John Pine: A Golf Story has all the bones of a strong screen drama: a washed-from-memory sports hero, a child riding shotgun, a stolen set of clubs, a high-stakes U.S. Open, and a lucky coin that keeps picking the worst possible moment to matter. Set in 1941 and told in flashback by John Pine himself, the novel follows one brutal turning point in a golfer’s life, just as his marriage blows apart and his chance at national glory arrives. That combination gives the book its hook right away.

What readers will probably notice first is how visual the storytelling is. Wheeler can stage a scene. A powder-blue Packard, a practice range full of resentment, a tornado-rerouted road trip, a crowded tournament course, a committee chairman ready to penalize John into oblivion: the book moves in crisp, playable beats. The golf sequences have real tension, but the novel is at its best when it lets emotion ride alongside action. John’s relationship with Cora gives the story heart, and his mentorship under the half-crippled but brilliant Arliss Peters gives it shape. The villainy here is not cartoonish so much as social. Pride, class, nerves, and bad decisions do most of the damage. A few stretches run a little long, and some readers may wish Wheeler cut more aggressively. Still, the payoff is satisfying because the novel understands that a sports story needs more than comeback energy. It needs consequence, and this one has it.
