This is an intriguing conflict between nature and death, with a living forest and necromancy as threats Math faces. Math’s dynamics are endearing, especially with his initiates, which gives a wholesomeness to his character. It is easy to understand what drives him and his desperation to protect those he protects. This creates a lovely balance to his dynamic with Kaiataris, which Lyons clearly enjoyed writing. Green & Deadly Things offers something new to fantasy, with Lyons creating a narrative that hooks you from the start with a delightful and dangerous blend of magic, forests, and necromancy.
