The eloquence Frederick Douglass exhibited when speaking to an audience led to a few skeptics calling him out. The doubters refused to believe the story of the abuses suffered under slavery happened. Frederick countered by baring his scars for all to see. Frederick Douglass (nee Bailey) was born in captivity in 1818. Frederick spent a large portion of his early years being shuffled back and forth between plantation owners Hugh and Thomas Auld.

Frederick’s treatment had shifted between civility when living in the house of Thoms Auld to cruelty under Hugh Auld and others. The worst treatment was meted out by those to whom Frederick had been loaned out. He escaped in 1838 with the aid of his future wife, Anna. He settled in upstate New York and joined the Abolitionist cause. The next fifty years witnessed Frederick advocate for freedom and equality.

Frederick Douglass delves into the life and world of one of the most pivotal figures in the anti-slavery and early civil rights movement. Douglass is portrayed as a complicated figure in a complicated world. Author Sidney Morrison has written a commendable book covering not only Douglass’ pivotal role in the Abolitionist movement but also his role as a husband, father and friend.
