Cherry Blossoms in Winter by Michael J. Summers is a historical tale about a soldier’s experience of passionate love and heartwarming friendship as he faces the uncertainty and pain of war. The story is a reflection of the experiences of thousands of young American soldiers who served in Japan and were sent to fight in the Korean War.

Jack Pierce, a young American soldier in Japan, meets Michiko Okura in a dance hall, where she works part-time. Following his return from training near Mount Fuji, the two lovers move to a small house in the countryside outside Camp Drake. Unfortunately, their beautiful love story is interrupted by the war that takes him to Korea and leaves them uncertain about their future together. Dane Chandler, who meets Jack at the pension’s cafe, is fascinated by his stories as he explores the passion of love and the allure of being a writer.

Michael creates a deeply evocative and engrossing tale. The book’s immersive, descriptive depiction of war left my heart racing with the thrilling sense of danger that can only be found in suspenseful war books. The serious themes of war are smartly contrasted with love scenes and romantic words from the adorable lovestruck protagonists. Another attractive theme in the book is the camaraderie that Jack and his fighting buddies share. Not only are their jokes and funny remarks infectious, but they also embark on daring adventures that land them in trouble with their leaders.

The book comprises various intriguing characters with unique dreams, especially Jack’s friends. While Eugene hopes to get his aeronautical engineering degree and work for Boeing, Perkins just wants to go home and run his family’s ranch and Jack wishes to marry Michiko. The story alternates between a first-person and a third-person viewpoint, creating a balance between an immersive exploration of Dane’s thoughts and an all-encompassing view of the other character’s experiences.

However, the book sometimes appears somewhat cumbersome and uncomfortably paced. It often derails into intricate details about activities that seem unnecessary and slow, like Jack’s drunken walk after an orchestra’s performance.

Readers who enjoy war tales will find the book deeply immersing. Apart from the vivid war scenes, it involves profound discussions about war and an eye-opening exploration of the Korean War. It’s appalling to see the repercussions of sending “outmanned, undersupplied, outgunned, and undertrained” Americans to fight against the North Koreans. Ultimately, Cherry Blossoms in Winter shines a light on the power of love and the chaos of war while captivating readers with catchy humor, action-packed scenes, and adorable love goals. Get ready for a very entertaining and educational experience.
