The Road from Belhaven: A novel

When the author introduces her readers to Lizzie Craig, the sturdy, intelligent, and independent girl is under five years old and is gifted with second sight. She has been orphaned but lives with her beloved grandparents on their farm. From an early age, she is tasked with farm chores, which take her from childhood play and closer friendships.

As is usual on a family farm, there is money anxiety. Nevertheless, Lizzie continues to contribute in any way she can, showing herself to be resourceful and hard working. Her calm and solitary life is interrupted by the surprise that she has an older sister who is coming to live with them. The sister is taciturn and rude so it takes a while for the sisters to discover each other.

When a boy arrives from the big city of Glasgow, things take a turn as Lizzie develops her first crush and her levelheadedness goes out the window. She becomes cught between two worlds of city and rural life as she is torn in both directions. The story becomes somewhat of a soap opera but is compelling and well written.
